National Accountability Bureau was established under the legal framework of National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 to eradicate corruption and corrupt practices and to hold accountable all those persons accused of such practices. The aspect of stolen asset recovery was for the first time introduced in any anti-corruption related law in Pakistan, as other laws on the subject are only punitive in nature.
NAB since its inception has played instrumental role in recovering billions of rupees, in cash and kind both, and made successful references in trial courts which culminated in conviction of accused persons.
NAB on behalf of the Government of Pakistan, is signatory to UNCAC which is an international legal instrument binding to 187 countries of the world in the matters of combating corruption and recovering looted money not only within but also outside Pakistan.
With recent amendments introduced in NAO, 1999 in the year 2022, the task of NAB has become more challenging, however the officers of NAB (Karachi) will continue to perform their duties within the four corners of the NAO, 1999, with full commitment, zeal and zest.
